Our Story
Tropical Wholefoods was founded with the mission of bridging the gap between small-scale farmers and conscious consumers. Inspired by the experiences of three aid volunteers in 1979, who witnessed the struggles of farmers facing crippling debts due to unfair pricing, Tropical Wholefoods strives to create direct and equitable trade relationships. By working closely with farmer cooperatives, the company supports communities in accessing markets and investing in their futures.
Equal Exchange COOP
Equal Exchange’s mission is to foster long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sustainable. They demonstrate the potential of worker cooperatives and Fair Trade to build a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable world. Through the support of over 40 small farmer organizations globally, Tropical Wholefoods ensures that the farmers who grow their products receive fair compensation, empowering them to reinvest in their communities.

From the beginning, Tropical Wholefoods has championed authentic fair trade practices by building direct relationships with farmers. By partnering with democratically organised cooperatives, they help farmers collectively access markets and decide how to invest fair trade and organic premiums. Co-op Owned
Emphasising the values of transparency and equity, Tropical Wholefoods operates as a worker co-op, where every worker-owner has a voice in decision-making and an equal share in the business. With a commitment to maintaining a low top-to-bottom pay ratio and sharing excess profits equally among worker-owners, they exemplify the principles of fairness and community support that underpin their operations. The co-op also has a “Never Sell Out” clause to protect its mission and ensure continued investment in alternative trade practices.

Tropical Wholefoods encourages a growing community of Citizen-Consumers who actively engage in building a better food system. Through monthly meetings, webinars, and events, they foster shared learning on vital topics such as climate justice, food politics, and sustainable agriculture.
