Principato di Lucedio

Principato di Lucedio

At Bonobono, we take pride in presenting the rich heritage of the Abbey of Lucedio, a remarkable establishment with a history that dates back to 1123.

Founded by Cistercian monks from Burgundy, the Abbey was instrumental in introducing rice cultivation to Italy during the mid-1400s, marking the beginning of a transformative agricultural era in the region.

The Birthplace of Italian Rice

The Abbey of Lucedio is recognised as the cradle of Italian rice, with the surrounding Grange territory evolving into a thriving farming district. This development was made possible through significant deforestation and land levelling efforts, which transformed the landscape into fertile rice fields. The Abbey's strategic location along the Via Francigenacontributed to its socio-economic growth, establishing it as a prominent political centre visited by three popes throughout its history.

A Centre of Power and Conflict

Over the centuries, Lucedio became a focal point for Italian dynastic rivalries. It changed hands among powerful families, transitioning from the Gonzagas to the Savoys, and eventually coming under Napoleon's control in the early 1800s. The Abbey later became the property of Marquis Giovanni Gozani of San Giorgio, an ancestor of the current owner, Countess Rosetta Clara Cavalli d’Olivola Salvadori di Wiesenhoff.

A Living Heritage Today

Today, the Principato di Lucedio stands as a site of historical and artistic interest, enhancing the cultural landscape of its region. The Salvadori di Wiesenhoff family manages the farm, which produces top-quality Italian rice. Visitors can explore the picturesque fields surrounding the Abbey and purchase products from the on-site shop, offering a selection of Principato di Lucedio rice, ready-to-cook risottos crafted with natural ingredients, as well as pasta and rice-based baked goods.
